For months, the community speculated, hoped, and doubted, including many who doubted me.
I often heard: “It’s never going to happen. Skoda doesn’t care about existing customers.”
But I stuck to my belief: Skoda would deliver.
And now, it’s official the long-awaited Software 5.4 update is coming to all ENYAQ models running version 4.x.
In this article, I’ll walk you through the context, technical background, limitations, and the bigger picture.
What is the 4.x generation anyway?
Between October 2023 and June 2024, Skoda delivered a batch of ENYAQ models with an interesting hybrid character:
New drivetrain, battery, and charging tech (part of the major facelift)
But still running on Software 4.0, 4.1 or 4.1.2 a transitional version, not the new generation.
So these vehicles were neither outdated nor fully up to date.
When Software Generation 5 arrived, these “in-between” owners found themselves stranded without a clear update path.
Until now.
What does the 5.4 update bring?
Version 5.4 is currently the latest software and comes with notable improvements:
- Smoother performance and UI
- Better overall driving experience
- Auto-confirmation of driver profiles when starting
- BUT: some small but useful features (like HUD view toggling) will be removed
And the biggest drawback:
The update is not over-the-air, but a workshop-only campaign.
This adds friction for customers and cost and coordination for Skoda.

Why did it take so long?
In my view, there were three key reasons and technical feasibility wasn’t even the main issue:
1. Technical
Was it even possible to create a safe and reliable upgrade path?
These cars use a mixed hardware architecture with legacy components with is a challenge for OTA environments.
2. Financial
Is it worth allocating resources to a limited customer group?
Updates cost money like workshop hours, testing, customer support and that’s always a business decision.
3. Organizational
Even if technically feasible: can the rollout be done consistently across regions and dealer networks?
Experience tells us that communication around updates has often been… let’s say, “patchy.”
So why is this still good news?
Precisely because it took so long, and the silence became deafening, this update sends a strong signal:
🔋 Skoda hasn’t abandoned existing customers
🚘 Skoda delivers, rather than cancels
💬 Skoda communicates
And let’s be honest: in the broader VW Group, that’s not always the case.
Skoda didn’t take the easy road. They took the right one.
They could’ve just moved on.
But they didn’t.
And that deserves credit, even alongside constructive criticism.
What happens now?
Skoda will gradually roll out the update via its dealer network.
⚠️ Important: Please don’t rush your local dealer. Let the process unfold. If your dealer doesn’t contact you proactively, you may need to follow up kindly and patiently.
The update is free of charge and may take up to half a day to complete.
I’ll report back with a hands-on comparison once my own ENYAQ has been updated and show what’s really changed.
The big open questions remain:
🔄 Will ENYAQ and ELROQ with 5.4 become truly OTA-capable?
🆙 Will there be ongoing improvements within Software Generation 5?
🆕 Or will Generation 6 arrive again without backward compatibility?
I’ll keep you posted.
