What’s Next for Charging at Škoda? An Exclusive Interview

Table of Contents

What’s coming next for the MyŠkoda app, Plug & Charge, and smart route-based charging? In an exclusive interview, I had the chance to speak with František Budinský, Project Coordinator for Digital Services and the Charging Experience at Škoda. We covered many topics that have long been discussed within the community – from charging history to API access, shortcuts, and Škoda’s vision for smart EV charging.

Charging history finally integrated

With version 8.1 of the MyŠkoda app, Škoda has finally delivered one of the most requested features: charging history.
Users can now see when they charged, how much energy was added, and how long the charging session lasted. It’s still very basic – but it’s a start!

The only requirement: you must be registered as the main user, and the vehicle must be linked in the app. František already confirmed that the feature will be expanded – for example, with historical charging curves or improved graphical displays.

Digital logbook? It’s coming!

Another highly requested feature: a digital logbook. Planning is already underway – but unlike charging history, implementing it is more complex, as the vehicle currently doesn’t transmit this data to Škoda’s servers. Still, the team is working on it, and the feature is “on the table.”

Plug & Charge – (still) limited to Powerpass

Right now, Plug & Charge only works in combination with Škoda’s own Powerpass. Other providers – like Ionity or Octopus Energy – currently cannot be used, even though it would be technically possible. František explains: the priority is a stable, unified solution within the Škoda ecosystem. However, the idea of opening it up is on the radar.

More transparency while charging

A common user request: real-time charging information in the car or app – ideally with live charging curves, stats, and summaries. This is exactly where Škoda wants to go. According to František, what we’re seeing now is only the beginning.

Filtering charging stations by provider – still pending

Currently, you can’t filter charging stations by provider in the MyŠkoda app or directly in the vehicle. This is a much-missed feature, especially for frequent drivers. The technical implementation is tricky due to data quality and availability. But: the team knows it’s wanted – it just needs more time.

The big vision: smart charging, based on your needs

Why should drivers still juggle dozens of tariffs, apps, and subscriptions – when the car could do all of it?
František and I discussed Škoda’s long-term vision for intelligent, need-based charging, where the vehicle would:

  • Pick the cheapest route
  • Charge at the most efficient stations
  • Consider your personal preferences
  • Use dynamic pricing and real-time availability

This is still future talk – but in my opinion, it’s the only sensible path forward. Features like load balancing and rerouting in case of station overload could be part of that vision, too.

Platform openness & APIs

Today, many third-party apps access vehicle data through unofficial means. An official API? Still missing.
But: Škoda is aware of the demand – and is considering possible solutions, such as a user-controlled model for access. Nothing concrete yet, but it’s on the radar.

Shortcuts & Smart Home integration

With the introduction of the first iOS Shortcuts, Škoda launched a kind of public beta test – and the response was positive. In the future, more shortcuts could follow, e.g., for stopping a charge, changing the charge target, or switching between charging profiles. Integration with smart home systems is also under discussion.

Community – why not directly in the app?

Škoda’s current community hub, the EV Lounge on Facebook, is a good start – but far from ideal. Many users no longer use Facebook.
So why not build a community space directly into the app? A forum? A voting-based discussion system like Reddit?
The team is open to the idea – the main challenge is moderation and internal responsibilities.
